For those who would like the combination of a 4:1 balun capable of tolerating almost any type of Off Center Fed Dipole or multiband loop installation and still provide the highest possible level of performance, the model 4116 is the solution. As the title indicates, this balun is a hybrid combination of a 4:1 voltage balun and a 1:1 current balun If you look closely at the image, you can see the coaxial wound 1:1 current balun underneath the voltage balun stacked above it. This combination results in a very versatile and rugged 4:1 current balun.
By utilizing a voltage balun in the first stage, the unit is able to handle any compromised or severely compromised installation with the 1:1 current balun providing superior RF choking, feedline isolation and excellent current balance. No matter if one or both antenna elements are over a roof line, next to large structures, close by a large amount of metal or strung through multiple trees, this balun can tolerate almost anything. Our beta testing showed the ability to provide excellent performance even in some very difficult and unusual installations.
Design Features:
- Custom mix toroid provides broadband coverage. Toroid is coated with epoxy paint for extra durability.
- The design has excellent low frequency response and very efficient (98-99%). Input impedance remains essentially flat across this frequency spectrum. Competing designs can very as much as 40%, especially at lower frequencies.
- 2 separate bifilar windings of 14 gauge Superior Essex Heavy build polyamideimide Allex 240 Winding Wire. This is NOT the enameled type (Formvar) used by my less expensive competitors. It is coated with a polyimide covering rated at a minimum of 2000v breakdown voltage. The windings are then inserted into teflon tubes which increases the total breakdown to 10,000 volts.
- Typical insertion loss is < 0.2db
- SO-239 connectors are silver plated with teflon insulation.All hardware is Stainless Steel. Eyebolts and studs are 1/4″
- Because of the high efficiency, this balun will not heat up or saturate like the typical cheap current baluns using ferrite rods, beads or open air wound coax.
- The balun is installed in a weatherproof 4″ X 4″ X 2″ NEMA Box which is an ideal enclosure for those who want to mount the balun remotely.
DO NOT USE THIS BALUN when building or replacing the 4:1 balun at the feedpoint of a Carolina Windom that incorporates a vertical coaxial radiator, a voltage balun should be used so RF will pass to the vertical radiator.
